Our History

Temple Beth Israel is a part of Fresno’s history. Almost a century ago about 40 families met near the rear of a furniture store to study and celebrate their 4000 year-old religion. A humble beginning, but nonetheless, it led to the incorporation of the first Jewish congregation in the San Joaquin Valley in 1919.

Our membership has grown to over 300 families over the years. We have moved from our original building on Calaveras Street, downtown which our Temple congregation occupied for well over 60 years, to our beautiful new building on North Maroa Avenue in 1992.

Temple Beth Israel continues to be dedicated to meeting the goals, educational, cultural, social and religious needs of our Reform Jewish community.
