We welcome new and existing Jewish families and individuals living in Fresno, Clovis and the surrounding areas, to join our Temple on a voluntary basis and without financial obligation for the first year.

This way you have the chance to experience the opportunities for you and for your children to grow in a Jewish environment, be educated on Jewish history, culture, traditions, history and importance of Israel and socialize with other Jewish children and young adults. Please click here to fill out the Membership Form... Welcome!

Temple Beth Israel is part of Fresno's history. Almost a century ago about forty families met in the rear of a furniture store to study and celebrate their 4,000 year old religion. A humble beginning, but none the less, it led to the incorporation of the first Jewish congregation in the San Joaquin Valley in 1919.

Our membership has now grown to over 350 families! We moved from our original building on Calaveras Street, which our Temple ocupied for over 60 years, to our beautiful new building on North Maroa Street in 1992.

Temple Beth Israel continues to be dedicated to meeting the educational, cultural, social, and religious needs of our Reform Jewish community.

A Message from Rabbi Robert Ourach

Rabbi Robert Ourach

At this time of year, and especially as the Temple annual meeting approaches, I am not only aware of, but am extremely thankful for, the many men and women of ourcongregation who take the time and devote the energy to help us create a Jewish life for our congregation and community.  I want to thank again, those individuals who have served our congregation as Board members, and welcome those who assume new positions of leadership.  The time and effort is well worth it, because it insures a Jewish future.  I also want the thank the families of our Board members.  The time devoted to leading our congregation ultimately reduces the time spent with your families.  I know that it is not just the Board member who makes a contribution to the community, but the entire family.

I hope that as the new Board takes on the tasks and challenges of the future, that we, as a congregation, will support their efforts.  May we also intensify our own involvement, so that the choices ahead will be made with broad-based support.

Finally, I want to take this opportunity to express a special word of thanks to Dewey Slater.  After thirty years in the rabbinate, I am keenly aware of how difficult it is to serve as president of a temple.  It has been my privilege, over the past two years, to work very closely with Dewey.  His dedication to Temple Beth Israel provides us with an example which should always be kept in mind.  Dewey has brought more than just a concern for details to his office.  He has brought devotion and heart.  Thanks, Dewey, for being a wonderful leader and an incredible mensch.

Shalom,

Rabbi Robert E. Ourach
